Trump tax hikes pressuring top universities to make education more affordable might do the opposite

Higher education insiders predict the nation’s top universities will pass the cost of a looming endowment tax hike onto students and donors, evading a Trump administration push to reduce expenses. Starting next year, the One Big Beautiful Bill Act will increase the tax on private university endowments’ net investment gains from a flat 1.4% rate to a progressive levy ranging up to 8% for the nation’s wealthiest schools.

Spare a Thought for the Shuttered Small College

New Jersey City University (NJCU) recently announced a plan to merge with nearby Kean University. The announcement comes after years of financial mismanagement and shrinking enrollment. NJCU is lucky. A merger is much better than going out of business outright, a fate that has recently befallen several historic institutions, including Limestone University, which closed after 160 years in operation. Eastern Nazarene College, established in 1900, has also closed, and its campus will be converted into housing.
