Wisconsin has revisited a bill proposed last year which seeks to tie the cost of tuition at the University of Wisconsin System to the consumer price index (CPI). Senate Bill 132—introduced by Senator Jacque and cosponsored by Representatives Murphy, Allen, Brandtjen, Brooks, Donovan, Knodl, and Moses—is a common-sense measure which would serve to curb the rapid cost increases which deter a large portion of the public from seeking higher education. ACTA wrote a letter in support of the bill praising the legislators for their attention to this vital issue.
Dear Senator Jacque
I wanted to reach out to you in light of your recent work on Senate Bill 132. As a nonprofit organization committed to preserving academic freedom, academic excellence, and accountability in higher education, the American Council of Trustees and Alumni (ACTA) appreciates your efforts to address the rising cost of college. We share your sentiment that students deserve a high-quality education at a reasonable price, and tying tuition to the Consumer Price Index is a positive step toward ensuring that college remains affordable and accessible to future students.
In this spirit, I would like to offer our aid if there is any way we can be of assistance. For over 25 years, ACTA has worked with trustees and public officials across the country, and we have testified before various legislatures and commissions in states including Florida, New Jersey, Alaska, Georgia, Montana, Texas, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and Ohio on matters such as curricular quality, affordability, and institutional accountability.
If there is anything we can do to help your efforts to support Senate Bill 132, or in any matter in the future, please do not hesitate to reach out to me directly.
We are immensely grateful for your commitment to American higher education, and I look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Armand B. Alacbay
