On February 10, 2022, Connecticut Representatives Travis Simms and Kenneth Gucker, in tandem with the Joint Committee on Higher Education and Employment, introduced Senate Bill 18, which mandates new appointees to any governing board at state institutions to receive comprehensive training on governance, financial management, ethical responsibilities, and student welfare, to be completed within one year of appointment. ACTA has monitored this bill as it has progressed through the statehouse, including writing a letter in support of the bill. By signing this bill into law, Governor Ned Lamont has taken a strong first step towards ensuring that Connecticut’s governing boards receive the resources they need to be active, informed stewards of their institutions.
